Why It Matters
A blocked drain and a sewer problem may present similarly — slow drainage, gurgling sounds, overflow — but they have very different causes, repair processes and costs.
Signs of a Simple Blocked Drain
- Only one fixture is affected (e.g. just the kitchen sink, or just one bathroom)
- Blockage cleared with a plunger or eel and doesn't return quickly
- No sewage odour from multiple locations
- No sewage overflow from ground level inspection points
Signs of a Sewer Problem
- Multiple fixtures backing up simultaneously
- Sewage coming up through the shower when the toilet is flushed
- Sewage smell throughout the house or from multiple drains
- Wet patches in the yard above drain lines
- Gurgling from multiple drains at once
What Causes Sewer Line Problems?
In Sydney, the most common sewer line issues are root intrusion, pipe displacement (particularly in older clay pipe systems), and structural failure of aged pipes. Parramatta, Penrith, Canterbury and inner-west suburbs have some of the oldest sewer infrastructure in the city.
Sydney Water's Responsibility vs Yours
Sydney Water owns and maintains the pipes from the main sewer to the connection point. The pipes from your house to that connection point are your responsibility. Understanding this boundary is important — your plumber can help you identify where the problem lies.
What to Do
If you suspect a sewer issue rather than a simple blockage, call a licensed plumber immediately. Sewage overflow is a health hazard and can cause significant property damage.
